Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō ryū was founded by Iizasa Ienao in mid 15th century, and is a sōgōbujutsu
(a complete warrior system).
Katori Shintō ryū is known as the oldest verifiable school in Japan.
Currently Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō ryū Ōtakedōjō is located in Narita, Japan and is led by Otake Risuke. While Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō ryū Suginodōjō is located in Kawasaki, Japan and is led by Sugino Yukihiro.
The official successor of the school is Yasusada Iizasa (20th generation headmaster and successor to the school) Legend says at the age of 60 Chōisai spent 1000 days in Katori Shrine practising martial techniques day and night, until the kami of the shrine, Futsunushi no Mikoto, appeared to him in a dream and handed down the secrets of martial strategy in a scroll named Mokuroku Heiho no Shinsho.
He called his swordsmanship style derived from this miraculous dream the Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintōryū, the “Heavenly True, Correctly Transmitted Style of the Way of the God of Katori”.
